A stakeholder community dedicated to biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP) systems has been launched by partners of two European research projects.

BIOCOGEN 2030 will foster knowledge exchange, gather feedback on R&D activities and enhance networking in the area, with the overall mission of increasing the share of bioenergy in the cogeneration market by the end of the decade.

The forum will consider critical topics influencing the up-take of innovative technologies and solutions, with a special focus on: biomass characterisation and suitability; process developments; market assessment; standardisation issues, and non-technological barriers.

The BIOCOGEN 2030 community is open to all interested stakeholders, who are invited to register via this form.

BIOCOGEN 2030 was initiated by the partners of BLAZE and SmartCHP, Horizon 2020 projects funded under the 2018 call for ‘solutions to reduce the cost and increase performance of renewable technologies’.

The BLAZE project is developing a new generation of biomass CHP power plants through the integration of gasification in a fluidized bed with a solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) system.

SmartCHP partners will design and build a novel small-scale cogeneration unit based on a modified diesel engine. The unit will run on fast pyrolysis bio-oil derived from the conversion of agroforestry residues and organic waste.

BIOCOGEN 2030 will host a virtual launch event in June via an online webinar. From then on, regular stakeholder events and webinars will be organised on relevant topics. 

Stakeholders signed up to the forum will receive periodic newsletters with updates from the projects, and be invited to develop joint initiatives and policy positions.
